One of the Biggest Interview Mistakes? Not Preparing Examples

"I interview people for a living. And trust me, this catches candidates out every single week."

I've been recruiting for over a decade, and I've lost count of how many interviews I've sat in where a candidate sounded brilliant at first.

Confident.

Experienced.

Professional.

The problem?

Everything they said was an opinion.

"I'm a great leader."

"I'm very organised."

"I'm good with people."

Okay.

Show me.

Because opinions don't land. Examples do.

This isn't another generic interview blog. This is a recruiter telling you exactly why good candidates sometimes lose jobs they were capable of doing.

If you've got an interview coming up, read this before you walk into the room.

1. Saying You're Good At Something Isn't Proof

Anyone can say they're a leader.

Anyone can say they're organised.

Anyone can say they're resilient.

The question interviewers are trying to answer is:

"Can you prove it?"

Fix it:

Instead of saying:

"I'm a strong leader."

Say:

"I managed a team of eight people during a challenging period, introduced weekly check-ins and improved performance across the team."

One statement.

One example.

Ten times more powerful.

2. Interviewers Aren't Trying To Catch You Out

One of the biggest misconceptions candidates have is that interviewers are trying to trip them up.

Most aren't.

We're trying to understand how you actually work.

What was the challenge?

What action did you take?

What happened as a result?

That's why questions often start with:

Tell me about a time...
Give me an example of...
Walk me through a situation where...

Fix it:

Stop preparing opinions.

Start preparing stories.

3. The Best Candidates Usually Arrive With Examples Ready

Here's something people don't always like hearing. The candidates who perform best aren't always the most talented. They're usually the most prepared. I've seen candidates with incredible experience struggle because they tried to wing it.

I've also seen average candidates smash interviews because they had examples ready to go.

Fix it:

Before your next interview, prepare examples around:

  • Leadership

  • Teamwork

  • Conflict

  • Problem solving

  • Communication

You'll cover most competency questions with those five alone.

Final Word From A Recruiter

Look, interviews aren't memory tests. They're evidence tests. If you tell me you're great at something, that's nice. If you show me a real example of when you demonstrated that skill, now you've got my attention.

So before your next interview, don't just prepare answers.

Prepare examples.

Because opinions don't land.

Examples do.
